Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

We've been here before...

Music venues must now cease live performance at 10:00pm on Wednesday. Yes, it's lockdown time all over again...or is it? Not quite, schools, colleges and universities remain open, it's as if the virus gives a wide birth to such institutions. So, from Thursday you can burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes or AN Other (the choice is yours) but if you want to hear some jazz, it's back to the virtual world of the live stream.

Until then, here's a selection of live streams to be getting on with...today (Sunday at one o'clock) it's the always brilliant Adrian Cox conducting his Sunday Service, this week in the company of pianist Joe Webb and Sidney Bechet. To view at 1:00pm, or catch-up later, simply head to Adrian Cox Music (Facebook, it's open to all).

Tomorrow night (Monday) there is the usual set from Ronnie's (8:15pm), this week featuring Joe Stilgoe (Tom Farmer, bass, Ben Reynolds, drums). In competition with Frith Street is the House of the Black Gardenia. The nine piece band's debut album - The New Lowdown - is just out and it's a cracker, so why not join Neil, Elise and co at eight o'clock
