Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: BBC Young Jazz Musician 2020 (Sun 22)

The inaugural BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 2014 produced a winner hailing from the southern most tip of Bebop Spoken Here's north east of England heartland. Saxophonist Alexander Bone was already on the radar when the former Chetham's School of Music student walked away with the prize. The biennial event's 2016 winner, trumpeter Alexandra Ridout, held off stiff competition (including her brother Tom, saxophone/recorder) and two years ago Birmingham based Xhosa Cole (saxophone - pictured) won the third edition of what has become an established award in the jazz calendar. At this year's event Cole returns as a guest performer.

The 2020 Young Jazz Musician of the Year final will be broadcast on Sunday evening at 7:00pm on BBC 4. Due to Covid-19 restrictions the five candidates will be looking to impress a panel of judges comprising Gwilym Simcock, Nubya Garcia and Orphy Robinson in an otherwise deserted Cadogan Hall in London. Each finalist will perform with Nikki Yeoh's trio. The finalists are: Alex Clarke (saxophone)Matt Carmichael (saxophone)Kielan Sheard (bass)Deschanel Gordon (piano) and Ralph Porrett (guitar). Who's your money on?
