Film preview: High Society - BBC 2 (Nov. 28)

CK Dexter-Haven faces a race against time to try to win back his ex-wife, Tracy Samantha Lord, before she marries again. A light-weight, typically preposterous Hollywood musical plot, made all the more preposterous by the (mis?) casting of the film's undoubted stars. Bing Crosby was some twenty six years older than his co-star Grace Kelly. Would Kelly have fallen for Crosby in the first place? Unlikely, all the more unlikely with Frank Sinatra, playing Mike Connor, looking a better bet, sharing the on-screen musical action with Crosby and Kelly.

The music is top notch, it couldn't be anything other with Cole Porter, Johnny Green and Nelson Riddle on board. The songs are great - Well, Did You Evah? Now You Has JazzWho Wants to Be a Millionaire?, True Love, I Love You Samantha,
High Society Calypso
and You're Sensational - and with Louis Armstrong and his Band (All-Stars) on screen High Society is well worth catching on BBC 2 tomorrow morning (Saturday11:30) with a quick repeat on BBC 4 next Thursday (December 3) at 8:00pm.

And there was Celeste Holm, she was the photographer friend of Frank Sinatra. Not a great actress, but she fitted the part. I have a " still" pic which Kevin bought me & had framed of "High Society" It is a limited edition , and original . They used to post these stills in glass fronted boxes outside the cinemas to advertise forthcoming films.
