This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Rico's Popup Louis w Will Barry - Nov. 13

Rico Tomasso (cornet, vocals); Will Barry (piano) 

Some years ago Rico Tomasso graduated from Leeds College of Music. More recently Will Barry graduated from the Royal Academy and went on to win the Musicians' Company Award of Young Jazz Musician of the Year (2017). Two talents, a generation apart, Rico and Will teamed up to present another in Rico's ongoing Popup Louis series. 
My Romance to start, with Rico playing his prized Bach cornet. What a great player, eh? Rico said of Will. Indeed. Ellington's All Too Soon, suggested by Will, maintained the highest of standards. Rico's online regulars expressed delight and surprise, in equal measure, that a young musician such as Will could be so good and play the music they love - they want to get out a bit more, Will is one of many twenty-somethings playing material like this! 

Gone with the Wind, Latin-style, How Deep is the Ocean? with Will's polished piano solo, it was going well. 

Beer time! said Rico. Old Peculier, good choice! Hobgoblin's Gold up here on Tyneside...cheers! Beautiful Moons Ago as played by Ruby Braff, a new tune to some of Rico's online supporters. Can't We Be Friends? sang Rico (the first, and only, vocal of the evening). Okay, straight on said Rico. And on they went with Ellington's Prelude to a Kiss. One more tune...Jerome Kern's I'm Old Fashioned. A super session.
