Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dom's Saturday Piano Truth - July 4

Dom Pipkin (piano/vocals)

This was "Super Saturday" or so they say. Well, for some of us, it's a super Saturday every week - especially around 9:00pm when Dom Pipkin takes us on a roller coaster piano ride of boogie, blues and barrel-house.

Nobody does it better - well nobody living that is!

New Orleans here we come with Fats Domino's One For the Highway; Yes Sir, That's My Baby; Summertime's Just a State of Mind (good choice); Summertime (bad choice); Let it Roll; Jelly Roll's The Perfect Rag; Sweet Lorraine; Moon River; My Street, Your Street (translation); Headin' South; Professor Longhair's She Walks Right in and Sleep. This latter number seemed a good idea after what had been a busy day at the office.

Dom's back again on Wednesday and next Saturday.

In the meantime, blues lovers can hear some of the great pre-lockdown blues performers from Leeds this evening at 7:00pm.

Let Steve Crocker tell it like it is:
"A final feature on blues performances by singers and instrumentalists who have appeared at Seven Arts, Inkwell and the Chapel Allerton Festival

Sarah Gillespie, Lucy Zirins, Alice Zawadski, Kyla Brox, Colin Hodgkinson, Paul Corry, Big Boy Bloater, Steve Phillips, Al Morrison's Blues Experience and John Taylor and the Blues Dudes. Plus the raffle for some (blue) Wensleydale cheese... Get those 12 golden bars a rollin'...

One final lockdown show is at a slightly later time so that people wanting to check out the live jazz at Seven Arts in the afternoon."
