Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Strictly Smokin' Live Stream #1 - May 14

Dave Kerridge (tenor/alto sax/flute); Pete Tanton (trumpet/vocal/piano); Ben Tanton (bass guitar); Alice Grace (vocals); Graham Don (keys/vocals).

These lockdown sessions must be incredibly difficult to organise and coordinate and it is to the credit of all concerned, including Michael Lamb who was, no doubt, the man who put it all together.

In situations like this it would be unfair to apply the same criteria as one does to a real live gig with an audience whooping and hollering for more and, as such, inspiring the soloists to greater heights. So, given the circumstances it was a grand performance with a few surprises thrown in and that's what jazz is all about - the sound of surprise.

I didn't know, for example, that Graham Don sang or that Pete Tanton played piano and that he (Pete) had a son who played bass guitar. I'd never heard Alice sing Guess Who I Saw Today? - what a great song - or that she had a cat. Two bonus points for Alice.

Dave Kerridge played alto, tenor and flute and didn't sing. Bonus point for Dave.

The sound wasn't always wonderful but overall it was okay and I look forward to the next one. Will it be the same team or will others be given the chance to strut their stuff?

I really enjoyed it , can't wait until they big band perform again but this was a great alternative as were the previous lockdown session songs . Thank you so much to all the performers for giving up their time and for their efforts in such difficult circumstances.
