This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Paul Edis: VE Day Lockdown Live! - May 8

Lunchtime Jazz - Paul Edis Solo read the on-screen caption. Solo, yes, but not alone, with a worldwide VE Day audience watching on. Pianist Edis had been thinking about this one, doing some research to present a themed performance on the 75th anniversary of VE Day.  

A vocal number to start - Long Ago and Far Away - with several others to follow during an hour-long set, Edis took the time to credit the composers, seeking to place the numbers in historical context. Two tunes associated with the anti-fascist movements of the time - Bella Ciao and Le Chant Des Partisans - struck the right note on another sunny, Lockdown Friday. Against expectations, at least for your reviewer, We'll Meet Again worked. Perhaps it shouldn't have come as a surprise given that it was Dr Edis at the keyboard!


Take the A Train with a hint of Monk in the right hand, Moonlight in Vermont (commenting on the structure of the the lyrics Edis alluded to a Lit & Phil Haiku competition!) and a respectful A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square proved to be just three of today's many highlights. C Jam Blues took it out - were you blowing your horn from your seat in Edis' virtual orchestra?

Yes Moonlight in Vermont (requested by yours truly) is unique in as much as being one of the few songbook classics without a single rhyme. Can anyone think of another?
