Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

It Didn't Come to Pass...

One of our readers has recalled going with his wife to Gosforth Park for a concert by Joe Pass only to find out that Joe hadn't come under starters orders and the concert was cancelled. I contacted "Mr Guitar" i.e. Maurice Summerfield as to the date and the reason behind the cancellation.

The concert, Maurice explained, was due to illness but he couldn't give an exact date as he didn't have all his files at home. However, acting on memory, he thought it was about a year after Joe's previous appearance in Newcastle at the People's Theatre which would place it around 1978.

Details of the concert that did take place are shown on the above image which Maurice kindly supplied.

Were you at the concert at The Peoples or were you one of the dissapointed punters?

I was definitely at the Joe Pass concert - not the kind of occasion one would forget. However, all these years it's been in my head that the gig was at the Gosforth Park Hotel. Odd how the memory plays tricks! Speaking of the Gosforth Park Hotel - correct me if I'm wrong - didn't Ronnie Scott cancel a performance at the venue? I recall turning up on the night in question only to find out the concert had been cancelled. If I imagined it then I give up!

I thought that I had missed Joe Pass for the same reason at The Corner House Heaton. Never mind my memory also goes missing these days!
