Bebop Spoken There

Kurt Elling: ''There's something to learn from every musician you play with''. (DownBeat, December 2024).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Enrico Tomasso & Martin Litton Lockdown Live - May 2

Enrico Tomasso (trumpet/flugel/vocal); Martin Litton (piano).

I came into this one after watching Muddy Waters and The Rolling Stones on Sky Arts. The contrast couldn't have been greater. Rico and Martin the personification of eloquence, The Stones (in 1981) somewhat less with the Muddy Waters Band somewhere in between.

However, musically speaking, they were all excellent in their own particular field.

I'm not sure what Jagger and co. were drinking but Rico was on Fullers' Bengal Lancer. I'm sure Russell will give us the lowdown on that particular brew - it's one of those bottle conditioned beers that leaves some sediment in the bottle so you have to be careful pouring it otherwise you get a cloudy pint. Rico's pint was nice and clear so he's obviously well practiced in the art of pouring and, of course in the art of playing.

Tonight's mini-set had Martin Litton on piano and the pair gelled perfectly.

The selection of Louis tunes for this session were: I'm Putting All my Eggs in One Basket with ET singing and giving us the info that Bunny Berigan was in the trumpet section of the accompanying orchestra on Louis' 1936 recording. A switch to flugel for What's New? inspired by Billy Butterfield's version followed by a blast on Bobby Hackett's solo on Singin' the Blues before finishing up with Dinah complete with vocal and Armstrong facial mannerisms.

In between the music there were the stories and anecdotes that kept us interested as well as the acknowledgements of those who passed comment

Faraway, in Hay-on-Wye, Martin Litton had laid down the piano foundation for our man as well as providing some rollicking solos of his own.

The online audience included such royalty as Pete Long and Noel Dennis.

Next week it's Spats Langham who shares the screen with Rico.

Indeed - Thomas 'Spats' Langham is live-streaming with Rico next week - and Tom is a most excellent 'balladeer' (as Rico himself said tonight!) He's a highly skilled guitar, banjo, uke player too.
