Colin Aitchison, that well-known jazz historian, bon vivant trumpet/trombone player and broadcaster currently resident "somewhere east of Suez" - Ned Kelly's Last Stand in Kowloon, Hong Kong to be exact - uncovered this amazing letter from Radio Review, July, 1936.

Good luck with that Lance , I can't wait until you tell the ladies and gentlemen vocalists at the next Jam Session , whenever that is , that their Crooning won't be tolerated !
I and many others have been taught jazz-singing by the great Lindsay Hannon at the Sage, and we certainly can't be accused of crooning! The article was funny, mind.
Oh, Lance - and Colin too! This is hilarious - such perfectly archaic writing for that time. But the guy was certainly most hot and bothered - I wonder if he'd heard Ellington's hotter than hades record played on one of those other radio stations? For me, I wouldn't have wanted to exterminate all crooners - there were a few far superior ones on the other side of the pond at this guy's time of writing. Even in the UK, we would have had Al Bowlly - with Ray Noble's great band ......
I agree, you can't be accused of crooning. Crooning was a crime performed by such arch-criminals as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Dick Haymes, Peggy Lee, Jo Stafford, Dinah Shore and many other Public Enemy Number Ones.
One more from me - does anyone know about the history of the Radio Review publication? I've done a few searches, but haven't found any info yet. I know the Radio Times was from the early 20's - but this letter was in the mid 30's, and I'm curious. Can anyone enlighten me please??
