Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Gateshead Jazz Festival

(Press release)

Ahead of Gateshead Jazz festival, which takes place at Sage Gateshead between 20 and 22 March, we caught up with Yazz Ahmed, Bex Burch (of Vula Viel), Binker GoldingNikki Yeoh, Shri and Paul Edis (of Triptych) who all answered some Q&As for us ahead of their performances at the festival (click on link for full Q&A).

‘Practise hard, listen to lots of different music, never be late and always bring a pencil!’

‘Advice for us all: get out the way, you are not special but the music coming through you is.’

‘If you want to be extraordinary you have to behave in an extraordinary fashion.’

‘Rothko feels like Jazz. His work demands interaction.’

'Cannot stress this enough – FIND YOUR OWN EXPRESSION!!'

‘Take your time, it takes time! Be patient, work hard and don't hide your light under a bushel. Don't worry if it isn't perfect, every performance is a rehearsal for the next.’

Upholding the venue’s long-standing commitment to Jazz, the festival (which is the UK’s biggest jazz festival under one roof) shifts into a new era with a fresh name; ‘Gateshead Jazz’.  Its focus is on attracting new audiences with cutting-edge artists joining established names, reflecting the current fervour for the genre and platforming talent from across the North. Read our latest Press Release here.
