Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Eales found in Empty Shop

(Report by Russell via Eales).
Bebop Spoken Here’s roving correspondent Tony Eales could be found in an Empty Shop last night. Durham’s Empty Shop on Framwellgate Bridge is one of Eales’ top priorities. Ever keen to spread the J word, Mr Eales flyers the unsuspecting: Roll up,
roll up! Jazz tonight at 35c Framwellgate Bridge!

Last night it was Eddie Bellis’ excellent West Coast outfit Lickety Split. A couple of  deps in – no slouches, mind you – Paul Grainger for Alan Rudd and Dean Stockdale. Piano man Stockdale was more of an addition than dep. Eales reports a good turnout (just as there was up the road at the Jazz Café in Newcastle).
If you’re approached in the street, café, or anywhere else for that matter, by someone handing out flyers, take pity, take one, say thank you and, before you hoy it in the bin, take a look, it won’t be some in/out nonsense or some end of the world is nigh type, it could well be Tony Eales spreading the (jazz) news.
Next at the Empty Shop on Thursday 16 June is the wonderful Alice Grace. Singing a selection of GAS book and more contemporary numbers, Ms Grace is worth travelling many a mile to hear. Eight o’clock start, a mere fiver to get in, magical.
Russell.

Flyers! Let's not forget the man who made street theatre out of distributing flyers - the late Keith Crombie of the old Jazz Café. That part of Percy Street by the Haymarket will never be the same again without the bearded figure of Crombie and his leaflets - RIP.
