Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Does Sound Affect Flavour? (We thought you might like this!)

This July, musicians, academics and whisky experts are joining forces on a series of unusual experiments that will investigate the effect of sound on the flavour and taste of a drink.  At Hackney basement jazz bar Kansas Smitty’s, the question of ‘Which Whisky Sounds Best?’ will be answered in a unique tasting and listening experience.
Focusing on how music and sound affect consumption, guests will be invited to taste a dram of Whisky from renowned brand The Glenrothes, which will be paired with vinyls specially chosen by musician Giacomo Smith, one of the Kansas Smitty’s house band. The month's results will be compiled and studied for correlation by Goldsmiths MA student, Bjorn Thorleifsson, who hopes to prove that certain rhythms, melodies and beats directly affect the taste of a drink.
Each residency is highlighted with a Julep special, July’s collaboration see’s ‘Joe’s Julep ft. The Glenrothes’ Speyside Single Malt’ grace the Kansas Smitty’s bar. Paying respect to the late, great Joe Temperley, a Julep as sweet as the music he played has been developed using The Glenrothes’ Single Malt, infused with vanilla, cloves, dark cherries, demerara cane, topped with a fresh cherry. Joe, a Scottish born, Glasgow raised jazz musician who made a big impression playing alongside the luminaries of the New York scene, played amongst the likes of Buddy Rich, Joe Henderson and even performed in the Duke Ellington Orchestra. This Trans-Atlantic, improvisation fuses together his homeland and the place he made his name, all in one drink. The tastings will take place on the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th July between 6.30pm – 8.00pm. Tickets £8 or £15 including Basement Tapes.
