This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Things Ain't What They Used to be!

Expecting a traditional presentation, of silly old wise men offering gold, frankincense and myrrh to a hungry baby who only wants a change of hay and some pre sucked rusks, Dorothy and I attended our youngest grandchild's annual Christmas concert.
What's this? No stable or an unfortunate 2nd year boy dressed as a donkey being dragged tearfully across the stage. No, none of that nonsense this year. Instead, we were treated to some wonderful music of various styles played on all manner of instruments by about 40 boys and some young men in their final school years.
The venue was the concert hall of Newcastle School for Boys, It is occasions such as this which answer my oft asked question “from where will our future jazzmen come?” I am not sure about naming names but two outstanding members of this group were pianist Cameron whose solo piece “Rosemary” was full of feeling and personal style. Jazz at its classical best. Well played young man and I look forward to seeing your name appear again on these or similar pages.
Then there was “Cool Corner Ben” featuring a simply wonderful smooth saxophone solo played by Benjamin. Remember that name. He produces astonishing silk-like notes from his instrument such as I have rarely heard. Well played Ben and thank you all for a simply splendid concert. Take a bow Mr Hopkinson – musical director special.
