Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Woven Entity

Lascelle Gordon (perc/electronics); Patrick Dawes (perc); Paul May (dms); Peter Marsh (bs) + on several tracks; Ben Cowan (keys/electronics); Julie Kjaer (alt/fl); Alan Wilkinson (alt).
(Review by Lance).
Releases on the Babel Label are rarely straight ahead and this is no exception. Woven Entity are described as a freewheeling expanded rhythm section who cook up a rich, strange brew of psychedelic jazz, electronic explorations, ethnological and unstoppable ritual grooves - I guessed it was something like that!

In truth, it's unfair for me to pass any form of judgement on this as it's so far beyond my comprehension of what jazz means to me that I should really have passed it on to one of my more visionary colleagues. However, they have a backlog of reviews to catch up on (hint, hint) so it's up to me to bite the bullet!
I'll take the easy way out and draw on the blurb.
C358X: Flurries of exotic percussion and a woozy, sourly cosmic synth skirt round each other, much like Sun Ra crashing an Art Ensemble of Chicago session.
Me=You: Morphs somewhat unexpectedly from a bracing free jazz workout for balafon, bass, drums and bongoes into a deep, insistent groove that might just lure the more adventurous listener to shake a tailfeather or two.
And so it goes on - not for me I'm afraid but, then again, I'm a guy who takes an umbrella with him on a sunny day so perhaps I need to throw caution aside and risk getting drenched - it could, like the music here, prove to be exhilarating - maybe!
Released on Babel BDV 13123 on Dec 15, 2014. Check it out here.
