Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Alison Rayner Quintet - August.

Alison Rayner (bs); Buster Birch (dms); Deirdre Cartwright (gtr); Diane McLoughlin (sop/ten); Steve Lodder (pno).
(Review by Lance).
With the exception of The Beatles' Fixing a Hole, all the compositions are composed and arranged by Ms Rayner who also provided her own take on The Beatles' number. The inspirations are many - the mind-turning moments when jazz-rock captured her after listening to Jaco and Stanley Clarke, the ending of relationships, the loss of parents, a hilltop town in Andalucia, bebop, Monk and Muppets, Sly, Ernest Ranglin and Cannonball, to mention but some. Those, most of whom are now gone, could have no better tribute paid to their memory than by the music on this album of delight.
Cartwright has, over the years, established herself in the leading echelon of guitarists and her playing here more than rubber stamps those credentials. McLoughlin, I'd only heard on one previous occasion - referred to later - and she doesn't let the side down! In fact she is more than just the icing on the cake - she's the marzipan too!
Apart from composing and arranging, Rayner's bass playing holds it all together and the bowed bass intro to Elegy for Art (her dad) captures a moment, although deeply personal, the listener will want to share with anyone who has lost a loved one.
Birch and Lodder had no choice but to swing their asses off! Two guys and three gals! they had to dig deep to keep male pride intact! And of course they did! However, music these days is no longer the exclusive preserve of gender, race or whatever and the bottom line is can they cut it?
These five cut it with mustard to spare!
Cartwright and McLoughlin are long-time associates of Alison's and I was privileged to hear them last year at Jan's Bar in Stoke Newington. The music here serves as a reminder of that enjoyable evening.
Lance.
PS: The Alison Rayner Quintet's August, is released in October (6) on Blow The Fuse Records whose website also includes tour dates starting on October 25 in Brighton but, sadly doesn't go further north that Nottingham - yet!.
