This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Can Anyone Help?

I wonder if you could help me. I am looking for more information about my granddad’s music career - photos or anything.
His name was Thomas Danby he was from Bishop Auckland and was a drummer in a number of jazz bands playing in local pubs and clubs around the north east,
In the Second World War he worked for the mines but was down South a lot with various bands.
I know this isn't much to go on as my father’s side haven't got much about his musical side.
It's ok if you have nothing I thought I would ask though

It's not a clear photo but that tenor looks very like my Pierret "Vibrator" with the underslung octave key, which from the 1930's belonged to a chap called Max Cresswell from Whitley Bay, who played all over the North East, including with Peter Fielding at the Oxford Galleries in the mid-'30's. I've never seen another of these rare saxes in the NE. It doesn't look like a King Super 20 or a Conn Connqueror, both of which had underslung octave keys, but rather different to this.
