This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) CD Review: Herb Silverstein - Monday Morning.

This is my first encounter with Herb Silverstein which is surprising as, apart from being a jazz pianist he is also, the blurb tells me, a doctor, ear surgeon, inventor, author and philanthropist. Founder of the Silverstein Institute and the Ear Research Foundation, Silverstein is also an avid skier and athlete - when, one wonders, did he ever find time to practice!
That he did is evident in this delightful album of original compositions expertly interpreted by his sidekicks.
Possibly Mingus, Shelly Manne, Bill Evans, early Miles and maybe a few others passed through his mind as he composed but if they did it was ephemeral - just enough to plant a few seeds!
Silverstein is a delicate pianist who swings in the most delightful way - his chord voicings are exquisite.
On tenor, Rupert brings to mind say, Richie Kamuka or Zoot whilst Nickelson has the Jim Hall, Herb, Barney feel to his playing.
Drexler's bass on the quirky Hungarian Waltz in A Minor reminds us of his impressive pedigree. Too vast to list here.
I'm not going to suggest this will be a CD of the Year but it will most likely be one I'll still be playing next December when many other discs by better known artists have been filed under Oblivion.
