The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Three Fall - Realize.

I usually wince when confronted with a CD from mainland Europe and I was sure this young German Trio would be be one of the most winceable ever.
It wasn't!

Admittedly there are moments when I felt a wince coming on but, fortunately, they were few and far between and weren't really winces at all but some rather outré use of harmonics and electronic devices - don't ask me what - that, in their own way, contributed to the music.
My first reaction, once I'd realised this wasn't going to be World War 3, was that this reminded me of the Jimmy Giuffre Trio - the line-up with Bob Brookmeyer rather than Jim Hall  - and it did in a contemporary sort of way. The jerky rhythm and the contrapuntal moments brought back memories of  The Train and the River. In his later years Giuffre was moving closer to the perimeter and I think he'd have approved of Three Fall.
Streun is effective on both tenor and bass clarinet whilst Schneider produces some gutsy sounds that I think his name-sake Moe (Moe Schneider long gone - 1919-1970 - Dixieland trombonist) would have approved of!
The material is a mix of originals and pop/rock covers from Rage Against The Machine; Nirvana and Coldplay. Names I never expected to be seen on this blog but we're moving into a world where music is much more integrated and it is as logical for bands of today to draw from the contemporary music scene as it was for older musicians using the Gasbook.
It's an album the grows on you with repeated playings. It probably won't be my disc of the year but it could be yours!
