This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Mud Morganfield @Summertyne Americana Festival July 21.

The opening set of Sunday night's double bill in Hall One featured Mud Morganfield, son of the legendary Muddy Waters and now becoming something of a legend in his own right. Resplendent in a white (or was it cream?) suit, Mud took us to Chicago maybe looking in at Detroit along the way. Staple blues fayre that his old man would loved.
Blues in my Shoes; Forty Days, Forty Nights; Midnight Love; I Just Want to Make Love to You; Got my Mojo Workin' and a host of others had the room rockin'. West Watson wailed on harp, Boyson grooved on guitar and Ranzoni stomped the Steinway with hands, feet and posterior - a fine way to treat a Steinway. On bass Jennings fiddles whilst Chris Burns - if the drummer is indeed named Burns.
As for MM - old Muddy would have loved him and not just for filial reasons - the boy laid it on the line in the family tradition which is Urban City Blues. The number of encores he took rubber stamped his popularity with the Gateshead Mob.
Surely the Heritage Blues Orchestra couldn't top this.
