This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Newcastle Big Band Fans Tune in Tomorrow to Radio 4 - "PM" Programme

An opportunity has come about to talk about John Pearce, my first husband and father of Anna and James, on Radio 4's 'pm' programme. (By Angi) 
This is possible because of a record that was made of the Newcastle Big Band shortly before John died in April 1974.  There were 2000 copies made and sold.  Andy Hudson, who was the brilliant originator and leader of the band, tells me that they are now collector's items - not because of John but because of the bass guitar, Gordon Sumner aka Sting of The Police!
I am excited (think that's the word - nervous certainly applies) to be being interviewed by Eddie Mair on a nostalgia slot on Radio 4's PM programme tomorrow  but the thought of John's trumpet playing being heard over the airwaves is wonderful and would thrill him to bits! 
John spent literally hours writing individual parts for all the members of the Big Band, for every tune they played, as well as rehearsing the almost impossibly high trumpet notes (top D) as heard on the recording of 'MacArthur Park'.
Perhaps those people who crowded into the University Theatre bar in Newcastle to listen to the Big Band every Sunday in the 70s may be listening and can enjoy the memories, too.

Angi, those were beautiful words - I was almost in tears myself. Very emotive and a poignant memory of those bygone days and worth waiting for the 50 minutes of the hourlong program it took to get there.
