Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Gavin Lee's Dixie Band @ Ashington Jazz Club June 5.

Gavin Lee (Soprano Sax.), Don Fairley Trombone. Dan McKeown (Banjo), Phil Smith (Bass), Steve Doyle (Drums).
(Review and photo on the left by Peter S.)
The Club has introduced to the members a variety of Jazz Styles and the June meeting was no exception as the Gavin Lee Dixie Band were welcomed onto our stage. An unusual front line of Soprano Sax and
Trombone and the efficient rhythm section behind created a pleasing combination and a first for the Club. The audience shared a delightful evening with this fine blend of musicians. The Sax and Trombone in tandem creating a very swinging blend of improvised Jazz within the selections over 2 sets. The backroom boys,
always in evidence and supporting with subtle teamwork gave the audience a wonderful evening throughout the twenty melodies delivered with style.
This is a well balanced group who received well earned applause. Gavin seemed surprised by our quiet responses but at AJC we have always been a good listening audience applauding in the right places and appreciating the time and effort these minstrels give to their chosen music. We look forward to a return  visit in the future if that is possible. We had a great evening and went home happy and I'm sure the band felt the same.
Peter S.
P.S. Our leader John Taylor (Far right of picture) joined the Band on the first number. Was not too sure of the title but  referred to it as "Busking the Blues"
Our July meeting at the Elephant is on Wednesday July 3. will have as guests The Bud Tones (2 Saxes, Bass, Drums and keyboard, and vocals from Fiona, one of the saxophonists.)
Hope you can be there.
