The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Azymuth @ Hoochie Coochie June 16.

Recreating their 1979 album Light as a Feather, Azymuth laid down their own particular brand of samba jazz and 70's Brazilian pop. Repetitious it may be yet, nonetheless, the compulsive rhythms wind their strings around your heart attuning your pulse into theirs.
Brilliant musicians all, my feet tap, my hands clap. What a drummer! Bass is no bummer! Keys and Korg and Fender Rhodes take us down Brazilian roads. Marcina picks up the guiro and soon we're in Rio de Janeiro.
It was all exciting stuff and yet I wanted more. A horn or too, a singer rather than the wordless vocals and maybe a more dynamic percussionist.
I realise this would have defeated the object of recreation but it would have been nice.
Surprisingly, there were few dancing to what is essentially dancing disco music.
Having said all that, it was still a groove-making night and if I was disappointed it was only by the tiniest margin.
