Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ruth Lambert w. Stu Collingwood Trio @ The Cherry Tree Restaurant.

Ruth Lambert (vcl); Stu Collingwood (pno); Neil Harland (bs); Paul Smith (dms).
(Review by Lance).
One of the quieter nights at the popular Jesmond eaterie - surely no reflection on the food or the music.
Chicken Roulade, Sweet Corn Puree and Pancake, Confit Chicken Wing was simply a dish to die for. Ruth, meanwhile was singing Summertime - who's she kidding? If this is Summertime then I'm an Irishman begorrah so I am!
You and the Night and the Music was undermiked but I'm pleased to say my Loin of Rare Breed Pork, Crushed Peas, Smoked Bacon and Soy Vinaigrette wasn't undercooked. It was perfection as indeed was The Man I Love now that the mic levels had been adjusted.

Long Ago and Far Away wasn't where I wanted to be - not when Ruth was singing that very song and I was floating in a sea of Pain Perdu, Poached Apricots and Spiced Ice Cream.
Time After Time lovely song, well sung, more applause needed from an apathetic crowd. How Insensitive! Willow Weep For Me and Love For Sale finished off the set coinciding with the finish of my bottle of Black Sheep.
Stu Collingwood was doing some amazing things behind the vocals as well as in solo, Neil - your story teller, The Man in Black. Neil does the business full stop. The flamboyance he leaves in the case with his bass guitar (tonight he's on double bass).
Why is Paul Smith using a walking stick? - Seems as though he has a problem with his fifth metatarsal. The ever inventive Paul has performed some jiggery pokery with foot pedals and hi hats to enable him to play them with opposite feet so there was no loss of swing.
Left for Metro/bus 27 just as the rain began - Summertime? Start dusting off Winter Wonderland.
Lance.
PS: Nice stage win for Mark Cavendish in Stage 2 of Le Tour.
