Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rendezvous with Our Man in Hong Kong in North Shields.

Maureen Hall (vcl); Barry Soulsby (clt); Iain MacAulay (tmb); Roy Gibson (pno); Jimmy McKeown (dms); Colin Aitchison (tpt).
(Review by Lance).
The idea was to nip over on the Shields' Ferry to catch Rendezvous Jazz, grab a beer and return - my thirst quenched, my musical taste buds sated. However, suddenly, things did, like the best laid schemes of mice and men, gan awry.
Enter Colin Aitchison.
Yes, "Our Man in Hong Kong" was here warming up for tomorrow's "Real Ale Train".
Colin and I go back a long way and we had lots of catching up, stories to exchange, memories of the Newcastle Big Band, his dad Hughie - with whom I worked alongside in Windows Music Store for many years - Ned Kelly's in Kowloon where Colin leads the resident band and, naturally a few beers (Lovely Nelly from Cullercoats Brewery) to keep the conversation flowing.
The pleasant sounds of Maureen's vocals, Iain and Barry's horns and the rhythm of Roy and Jim drifted through from the music area and it was much appreciated by the crowd - and there were quite a few.
Colin sat in on Big Butter and Egg Man as well as singing and playing Ain't Misbehavin'. Good solos all round and a Satchmo vocal from Colin. (Satchmo vocals come with the territory for trumpet players.)
Apologies here for my tardiness, but I also enjoyed meeting up with Jeannie, Colin's lovely lady.
A good afternoon and nice to take a trip down Memory Lane.
Lance.
