Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Plenty Time For No Time For Jive @ The Magnesia Bank, North Shields.

Brian Lynam (hca/vcl), Pete Readhead (gtr), Keith Forsyth (bs/vcl), Nat McLeave (dms).
Newcastle were playing Sunderland in Newcastle so I decided a visit to the Jazz Café which is situated precariously close to St Jame's Park would be unwise. Instead I opted for the Maggi Bank where No Time For Jive were playing Chicago Blues.
This was rivetting (as in shipyards) my baby done me wrong music that kept the feet tapping and the hands clapping as the sagas of unrequited love poured out.
Brian Lynam, looking cool in a pale suit with 3 buttoned jacket and a windsor knotted red and yellow striped tie complete with gold pin, is one wild harpist bending, chording, growling and producing unbelievable sounds from an 8 hole vamper or a 12 hole chromatic. Scotswood Slim, as he is also known, hollers the blues like as though he was born on North Clark Street.
On bass, Beefy Le Slap also shouted some blues as well as slapping the guts out of an unusual bull fiddle (really wide f holes).
Guitarist Pete thrashed out the twelves in every conceivable form and did everything but duckwalk a la Chuck.
On drums, Nat The Shuffle kept it all pulsating and never, noticeably, missed a beat.
This is a band that has got it all together.
Lance.
