This latest edition to the Posters and Programmes is a reminder of what was possibly the greatest ever Jazz Festival held in the North-east if not the UK.

As well as the names on the poster there was Harry Edison, Lockjaw Davis, Vic Dickenson, Dick Hyman, Major Holley, J.C.Heard, Chris Barber, George Melly, Montgomery, Georgie Fame and NYJO!

How could I not have heard of it before? And to have missed it, never having lived outside the North East! Unforgiveable. I'm busy raking through the grey matter to work out where I might have been.
Did see Ella and Oscar at City Hall in Newcastle, but not sure when-but wont sleep thinking of what I missed.

I was in Edinburgh and heard about it on the Wednesday. I had just left school and in those days we could sign on in the holidays so my first £13.50 dole check took me by train to Middlesborough. I paid £1 to watch the gig and slept on the veranda behind the old Middlesborough general hospital. At the time it was the best days of my life, even now it still ranks. All the best jazz musicians in the world in Middlesborough! There was even a Pernod promotion...
