The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Darlo Devastated

Today's Northern Echo revealed that severe government cutbacks look like causing Darlington's two premier music and arts outlets - Darlington Civic Theatre and Darlington Arts Centre - to close.
This was later confirmed in conversation tonight at the Sage with Darlo's jazz supremo Peter Bevan.
Existing bookings will be honoured but, after that these two oases will no longer operate.
The tide is coming in the water level is rising...

This is very alarming news. I've been to the Arts Centre many times over the years and it always seemed like a hive of activity with all sorts of nice things happening, often several on the same evening. I would say these venues are very significant part of the area's creative/social fabric and its terrible if they both have to close.

Perhaps you should start compiling a list of regional events & places that are affected, so that the impact of the cuts are clearly documented.
