Bebop Spoken There

Gary Bartz: ''Music is nature's gift to man. It's the only religion. We're living in a terrible era, but what a beautiful thing music is. Look how it brings us together like religion is supposed to; and with no language barriers.'' (Jazzwise September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

A few thoughts on Cassandra Wilson

Following her death on September 1, (announced yesterday) I have been, mainly, listening to Cassandra Wilson’s early Blue Note albums from that magisterial period in her career from the early 90s, namely Blue Light ‘Til Dawn, New Moon Daughter, Travelling Miles, Belly of the Sun.

What marked these early Blue Note albums out was the way in which her deep, contralto voice was accompanied by stripped down instrumentation, using spare combinations of bass, guitar, percussion, (sometimes lots of percussion), clarinet, pedal steel guitar, violin and, on one track washboard and ash tray usually singly, rarely in anything approaching a group format. This barren instrumental landscape threw all of the focus on to her blues drenched vocals as she slurred or dragged her lines, often very seductively. This languor seemed to capture her roots in a lazy, sun soaked Mississippi.

Her choice of material was another defining feature of these albums. Largely eschewing the GAS (though her versions of Strange Fruit and Skylark are well worth a listen) for her own compositions or covers of songs by, amongst others, U2, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Robert Johnson and, on Travelling Miles, Miles Davis.

I always regard these albums as the high water mark of her career as she set out her stall as an individual performer working to her own strengths away from the mainstream and jazz singer orthodoxy. Even though she stayed with Blue Note for a few years after I suspect that nothing else she did landed with the same high profile impact as Blue Light ‘Til Dawn in 1993. Dave Sayer
