The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Clifford Jordan - Night of the Mark Vll (Time Traveller)

Clifford Jordan (tenor sax); Cedar Walton (piano); Sam Jones (bass); Billy Higgins(drums)

A reissue from 1975. A live recording of a Paris concert by Jordan initially released on the legendary Muse label and made available by Time Traveller's intrepid jazz detective Zev Feldman on a 180-gram 12" vinyl LP.

Even back then, eight years after his death, John Coltrane's spirituality was ever present as the eponymous opening track indicates. It's a slow dirge with lots of background chants but, to my mind, a throwaway track.

Not so the rest of the album which is hard bop all the way with Jordan blowing his spanking brand new straight from the factory Selmer Mark Vll as if they'd become acquainted at birth.

Straight down the middle blowing with Walton, Jones and Higgins in there pitching all the way.

There will be few better albums this year unless the Lewis Watson Quartet decide to put last night's gig to vinyl.

Amazingly, although I'd heard of Jordan via jazz mags and discographies this is the first time I can recall actually hearing him. I'm pleased to have caught up.

Once again Zev has delivered the goods. Lance
