Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Was it the case of Nearly there or Steely performance? Nearly Dan @ The Glasshouse - Sept. 13

I thought I'd attempt a review of Nearly Dan's gig at the Glasshouse. Steely Dan and particularly Donald Fagen are hugely influenced by jazz and their music reflects that so this tribute band reflect that in their performance, I've not seen many tribute bands who have a brass section in their line-up.

"28 Years  of touring  Steely Dan"  Steve Hayes announces as the band take the stage to an enthusiastic audience , a few young un's have turned up but mostly it's their core devotees who have religiously trekked to the Glasshouse for the band's annual visit.

The first half is more wistful and considered The Caves of Altamira opens, Pretzel Logic gets a run out, the gig’s standard Haitian Divorce with the distinctive wah-wah guitar break gets a huge cheer. Two Fagen tracks from the Nightfly album -  IGY and surprisingly, Walk Between the Raindrops.  Steve teases us by offering to do two consecutive nights one of the Dan and one of purely Fagen "You buy the tickets, we’ll do the nights." Huge applause ensues and if we didn't live in this cashless society I'm sure money would have been thrown at the stage. The first set concludes with Aja probably one of the most jazz influenced and I personally think self-indulgent tracks Becker and Fagen recorded.

After a gulped quick pint we are back for a second half with all the big hitters: Do it Again, Kid Charlemagne, My Old School, Peg which seems to get a lot of airplay on several Radio 2 shows. Hey Nineteen gets a run out, I struggle to clear my head from hearing Phil Collins’ Easy Lover when the chorus kicks in but I get through it. Steve continues to plug their new merchandise they threaten to stay until it’s  all sold, it seemed to go well but Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Steve!

As always this accomplished band play a great gig to a bevy of devoted fans and long may it continue, hopefully the seed of two gigs comes to fruition everyone there would certainly dig deep in their pockets, until then as the Yacht rocks its way back out of the Tyne it's back to all things jazz perhaps I'll give the Nightfly a run out.
