Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Richard Iles Heatons Deluxe @ the Moors Club, Stockport - Sept. 7

© Jeff Pritchard
Richard Iles (flugel); Jamil Sheriff (keys); Uli Elbracht (guitar); Sam Quintana (bass); Eryl Roberts (drums).

The last time I saw Richard Iles was at Saison, a small venue in Didsbury. For this gig Richard was fronting a quintet which contained two musicians who were making their first appearance at the Moor Club. Playing a Nord 4 keyboard was Jamil Sheriff who I think has been seen at the Railway and the Slug and Lettuce on occasions. Another newcomer was bassman Sam Quintana who I recall from sessions at the Slug in Didsbury which is also  a place that no longer has a jazz policy.

A total of ten tunes were played during the two hour time slot, five per set. These were a mixture of standards and originals and if I had to select one that I liked best from each set I would  pick In a Sentimental Mood and  Secret Bossa Nova.

Good to witness some tasty brushwork from Eryl on these numbers as it made a nice contrast to his stickwork which can be explosive at times. I liked what Uli was doing on the guitar and I'm pleased he got plenty of solos. It was Sam Quintana on bass that took a great solo on a tune called Old Friends in the second set that stood out  for me and I hope he makes a return visit to the Moor Club before too long. Mike Farmer

Have You Met Miss Jones?; Greenbank; Metheny Place; In a Sentimental Mood; Northern Summer;  Everything I Love;  Sorta Kinda Blueish; Secret Bossa Nova; Old Friends; Grooveator (?)

Next Sunday (Sept. 14), Suzanne Fonseca and Carole Williams play Jay and Kai,  £5  entry 8:00pm-10:00pm.
