This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. R.I.P. Tom Lehrer (1928 - July 26, 2025)

Tom Lehrer died last Saturday (July 26) at the grand old age of 97. His name may not mean much to today's anti-this, anti-that activists but back in the '50s his satirical lyrics were both cutting edge and poignantly funny at the same time.

I almost wore out my two Lehrer 10" LPs through repetitive playing. I almost got to see him in concert at Newcastle City Hall but that's another story.

I still have the records and maybe I'll dig them out and see if they still draw a smile.

Tom Lehrer was by no means a jazzman but he had the ability to poke fun at the establishment in a manner that was jazz in spirit if not in content.

I wonder if he has any unpublished writings about the current US administration bearing in mind he was a Harvard man?
