Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Mouth of the Tyne Festival (the Jazz Stage)

This weekend (July 12/13) is the weekend jazz lovers and sun worshippers look forward to - the annual Mouth of the Tyne Festival.

The free alfresco event takes place on a green space adjacent to Tynemouth's historic Priory and features a cross section of local bands.

North east expat, trumpet player, trombonist, vocalist, jug blower, jazz historian and Radio Hong Kong (RTHK3) broadcaster Colin Aitchison, now a longtime resident of Hong Kong, will be making a couple of guest appearances over the weekend (maybe more!)

Programme

Sat 12:
12 noon: Vieux Carré Jazzmen*
1.00pm: Rendezvous Jazz
2.00pm: Mississippi Dreamboats
3.00pm: Classic Swing
4.00pm: Abbie Finn Trio

Sun 13:
11.00am: Trilogy of Four
12.10pm: East Coast Jazzmen
1.20pm:   Delta Prophets Trio
2.30pm:   House of the Black Gardenia
3.40pm:   Mouth of the Tyne All Stars*

* Featuring Colin Aitchison.

All events are free and there are plenty of bars nearby. Be sure to checkout the weather forecast. Last year you needed an umbrella, the year before factor 100 sunscreen was the order of the day (as I painfully found out). I think it's going to be a hot one this year so take care. Lance
