Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday night @ the Globe - Hannah Brine Quartet - June 15

© Sheila. Herrick
Hannah Brine (vocals); Dean Stockdale (piano); Andy Champion (bass); Gaz Hughes (drums).

I was nervous. On the strength of singer/songwriter Hannah Brine's debut album Blue Sky Now (due out on June 27) I'd waxed eloquently on her merits in the hope that the customers would come and, if they did, they would like what they saw and heard.

The answer was 'yes' on both counts as the 'clapometer' showed after the opening number - Boxes.

Hannah isn't an out and out jazz singer but when she does dip into the GASbook her wide range, which wouldn't be out of place upstairs in Ronnie's, copes to great effect. Thus we had a balanced mix of originals from the album and some much-loved standards although I do think that My Funny Valentine should, like White Christmas, be restricted to the appropriate season.

The originals are well-crafted with memorable melodies and lyrics that mix sadness with hope.

A minor criticism is that she occasionally takes a breath in the middle of a phrase affecting the flow of the line. However, as the same charge could also be levelled against Ella Fitzgerald it's no big deal.

One thing that stood out was that singer, band and audience were having fun. Dean, Andy and Gaz were at the top of their game, particularly on their instrumental feature Bye, Bye Blackbird. Top marks also to the sound engineer who got it just right.

Next Sunday it's JazzMain down frae Edinburgh. Lance
