The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Terry Waldo and the Gotham City Band - Treasury Volume 2 (Turtle Bay Records)

All tracks: Mike Davis (cornet); Jim Fryer (trombone, vocal); Terry Waldo (piano, vocal); Brian Nalepka (bass, vocal); Jay Lepley (drums). 

2018 tracks: Evan Arntzen (clarinet, soprano sax); Nick Russo/Jerron Paxton (banjo, vocal); Colin Hancock (cornet); Ricky Alexander (tenor sax); Arnt Antzen (banjo). 

On Get Out and Get Under the Moon: Molly Ryan (vocal); Dan Levinson (sax); Mike Lipskin (piano).

Guess Who's in Town?: Veronica Swift (vocal).

Split over two sessions - 2018 and 2022 -  this is number two of a trilogy. I reviewed the first part HERE earlier this year and this is very much the same gang mining the same seam.

They do it well, capturing the idiom to perfection and most get solos that don't go too far into the infinite, maybe just a glance through the keyhole.

Davis, Hancock and Fryer are no strangers to the north east having made impressive appearances at the Classic Jazz Party.

If the 1920s are part of your time warp you are recommended to check this and the previous one out on Turtle Bay Records.or whichever platform you use. Lance
