Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday night @ the Globe: the Ben Crosland Quartet - May 4

© Sheila Herrick
Ben Crosland (bass guitar); Rod Mason (soprano/alto/tenor saxes); Dean Stockdale (piano); Dave Tyas (drums)

And I thought last Sunday was great! Well this session was likewise. Whichever way it was a split decision - impossible for me to lean towards either group, both were firing on all cylinders.

I've always been a trifle lukewarm towards the soprano saxophone whether played by Bechet, Lacy, Trane or almost anyone else. However, last night my perception of the instrument changed. Rod Mason blew up a Brecker-like storm on tenor, was superb on his singular outing on alto but on soprano he was simply out of this world!

Dean Stockdale too was on top form, not least when coaxing some B3 sounds from the Yamaha piano. From east coast to west coast Dean's your first keyboard call

The material was either composed or arranged by leader Crosland who, rather than cover up a paucity of ideas with a meaningless flurry of notes like so many bassists do, adopts a subtle less is more approach that works beautifully - and so it should seeing as he did the arrangements. You don't invent a game to get beaten at it! Plus, in my eyes, anyone who likes cats and the music of Ray Davies have got a whisker's start.

On drums Dave Tyas drove it along in the fast lane. Sympathetic always and aggressive when called to put the boot in. His playing as perfect as Crosland's was purrfect.

Olly Murs? (on at the Arena) Never heard of him! Lance

Beeswing; Last Train North; Duke's Anthem*; Fawlty Tenors; Billie's Blessing; You Really Got Me; ?**; Set Me Free; The Cost of Living; Mr Fonebone.

* Duke's Anthem refers to George Duke not Ellington, Pearson, Jordan or John Wayne.
** I missed the title of the second set opener which featured Rod Mason on alto.
