I posted a mini review of the first two tracks when they were released as singles back in early March and I eagerly anticipated the arrival of the complete album. Well it's here and I'm pleased to say that it lives up to my expectations 110%.
A cover of the iconic 1958 album by Billie Holiday, I can't think of any of the current crop of vocalists more suited to the project than Kandace Springs. Comparisions are unfair to both. Billie was nearing the end of her life, Kandace is in her prime.
Although Billie's voice had deteriorated, showing the stress, strain and suffering of her tragic life it also displayed an emotional content that lifts the song - any song - far beyond the lyricist's wildest dreams.
That Kandace, putting her own take on the material, still captures the pathos of the words without (presumably) having lived the life that Billie did speaks volumes for her own musical ability. When I posted my earlier review I indicated that it wasn't a case of which one to go for. You need one to appreciate the other - it works in both directions. Lance
