This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Judy Whitmore - Let's Fall in Love (Arden House Music)

Judy Whitmore first graced these pages when I reviewed what was then her third album Isn't it Romantic? HERE in 2022. Let's Fall in Love follows a similar pattern with the additional bonus of strings, harmonica, French horn, harp and a vocal duet with Ty Taylor on Let's Fall in Love.

The eternal question arises: is it jazz or is it quality popular music? I would say, to a greater or lesser degree, it probably is both with the solos and the arrangements more jazz inclined and the vocals less so. Whatever, it's very listenable. Songs For Jazz-Orientated Lovers might make for an alternative title.

The arrangements by Chris Walden are imaginative and the solos, one each, by Driscoll and Scesney (saxes), Meurkins (harmonica), Livingston (bass), Martin (trombone) and Synowiec on guitar slot in easily with the vocals as does pianist Nelson who has five solos as well as providing empathetic backing for Whitmore who extracts the composers intent to a T whilst still retaining her individuality.

What is sure is that it puts the baloney that is the Eurovision Song Contest, which took place last weekend in Switzerland, into perspective. I'm told that the UK entrants finished 19th with nul points. Nothing new there. Still, finishing 19th in that 'musical' travesty is like winning in the real world. Lance
