Public holidays afford the opportunity to do this, that or the other. Here on Wearside, VE Day 80th anniversary commemorative events were underway three days ahead of the actual day (Thursday, 8th May*). The Fire Station performance space on High Street West was hosting a dance event of some kind and refreshments were being taken in the adjoining Engine Room.
The Engine Room's monthly jazz night wasn't about to be displaced by diners, drinkers or dancers. It was a case of 'business as usual' as the Michael Young Trio set about entertaining those who cared to listen. We were there to listen. The trio's monthly Monday evening session guarantees two things - an eclectic set list (something for everyone) and some stupendous piano playing.
The Beatles to David Bowie (tunes jazz and non-jazz fans alike will know), throw in a Latin number or two, a waltz, Basie swing and some serious piano playing - the likes of Bud Powell, Ahmad Jamal and the octogenarian Kirk Lightsey spring to mind - and you've got yourself a winning gig. Michael Young, working alongside bassist Paul Grainger and drummer Abbie Finn, is your monthly (early Monday evening) treat. Be sure to check the BSH listings for the next one.
* The Fire Station's VE Day 80th Anniversary Concert is an unreserved seating, ticketed affair, suggesting people will come and go. Doors at 6:30pm, expect a bugler, local dignitaries searching for the right word and music. The latter includes an all-star Jason Holcomb ensemble.
