This event got off to a shaky start as there were lots of people listening to a disk jockey doing his thing and this caused a 15 minute delay before things got sorted out and the musicians could start playing!
The opening number was You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To which featured Gair Carson on alto sax. I always think of Art Pepper when I hear this tune and his great version with Miles Davis' rhythm section. This was followed by the Clifford Brown classic Joy Spring which Gair played on tenor. I thought his choice of tunes was interesting although I prefer to hear bop tunes in a quintet setting but that is just my own view. Considering the late start, Gair did well to play a total of twelve tunes during the evening.
If I had to pick out a couple of highlights I would say from the first set Darn That Dream which featured alto flute and from the second set a very lively St Thomas played on the smaller concert flute.
Paul Hartley was working hard tonight. As well as playing in the band he announced the tunes and helped run the raffle. Ken Marley, who has been very active in the north east recently, did a great job and I always enjoy his energetic solos. Eryl Roberts kept things swinging and what better value can you find on a Sunday night for the admission charge of £5? Next Sunday, May 11, features Julian Gregory and Matthew Compton. Mike Farmer
