An absolutely delightful album by a singer/songwriter who, until now had been but a name on the outer periphery of my radar. Not any more!
Although she has been involved in various projects including arranging, directing and managing various choirs and vocal ensembles; appearing at festivals and jazz clubs, Blue Sky Now is her debut album and it certainly removes any clouds that may be hovering around as you listen.
It's like the moment when you first heard Gilberto singing about Ipanema, Ella's take on Manhattan or Frank's on Chicago. The chills run up your spine but with a difference - Hannah actually collaborated on either the words or the music or both with a variety of fellow composers and lyricists such as Michael Garvin and Emily Phillips. They're all meaningful lyrics that go far beyond the Moon and June songs about loves won and lost.
In general the themes are of sadness and disappointment yet such is Brine's interpretation that the overall effect is of an eventual 'glass is half full' feeling,
With north east exports in the form of guitarist and producer Jamie McCredie and Paul Edis who did nine of the ten string arrangements (McCredie arranged the title track) the string quartet add that extra sense of fulfillment to the overall sound.
The actual release date is June 27 but prior to that, on June 15, Hannah Brine will be at the Globe, Newcastle accompanied by Dean Stockdale (piano); Andy Champion (bass) and Gaz Hughes (drums). Can't wait - a treat is in store! Lance
