Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Vanisha Gould - She's Not Shiny, She's Not Smooth (Cellar Music)

Vanisha Gould (voice, composer); Chris McCarthy (piano); John Sims (bass); Jongkuk Kim (drums)

All of the these little things we do, that I do, to make sure everything goes smoothly - you can bet your bottom dollar that something will go wrong.

The above philosophy is the theme behind this collection of originals, commissioned by the Jazz Gallery and composed by NYC based singer/songwriter Vanisha Gould.

The words are perceptive, a mix of humour and pathos written by someone who's been there and back and survived - sometimes, not often, to advantage.

I've been there, you've been there, everybody's been there - it's one of life's inescapable facts.

Vanisha Gould conveys the themes with a laconic Sophie Tucker, Pearl Bailey-like delivery. The lyrics, whilst indisputably Gould's, do, on occasion, have a distant suggestion of Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits or even Blossom Dearie. Whatever, they're tailor-made for today, yesterday and tomorrow.

The actual melodies are equally attractive and helped along by a swinging trio. Solos from piano and bass with fitting fills from drums make for an album of poetic lyricism.

Release date isn't until November 11 however, it can be pre-ordered via Bandcamp (link below), with a couple of samples to whet the appetite. Check it out. Lance

She's Not Shiny, She's Not Smooth: Demure; Real Estate Agent Love Song; Cute Boy; Get Out of my Way; Just a Man; Oh My Dear Friends; Now That You're Here; Donovan; Don't Worry Bout me; New Dance
