Bebop Spoken There

Gary Bartz: ''Music is nature's gift to man. It's the only religion. We're living in a terrible era, but what a beautiful thing music is. Look how it brings us together like religion is supposed to; and with no language barriers.'' (Jazzwise September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Daniel John Martin with Swing Manouche @ the Globe, Newcastle Oct. 27

© Patti
Daniel John Martin (violin, vocal); Mick Shoulder, Danny Lowndes (guitars); Paul Grainger (bass) + Giles Strong (guitar).

To review the same band twice in three days presents a challenge, some may say, a pointless one as it was unlikely anything was going to change over such a short period of time. Nevertheless, you never know and last night's show concluded with guitarist Giles Strong sitting in on Minor Swing.

Earlier, we had an extended first set - 65 minutes gave some of the audience itchy bottoms - nevertheless, the music, albeit predictable, was enjoyable with the maestro and his cohorts playing an impeccable programme of hot club favourites alongside some lesser known Reinhardt compositions.

As he did at the Lit & Phil on Friday, apart from swinging à la Stéphane, DJM also exercised his vocal chords, on this occasion, After You've Gone. He sings well and should do it more often - even at the expense of some 'showboating'!

Lowndes and Shoulder, as ever, thrashed and soloed authentically in the hot club tradition with 'Cuddles' Grainger, cool and laid back, hugging the bass.

My bus was due so I unfortunately missed Giles Strong's contribution but I'm told it was impressive. Lance

Tunes included: Hungaria; J'Attendrai; Oh, Lady be Good!; Swing 48; Estate; Swing 42; After You've Gone; My Blue Heaven; Anniversary Song; Minor Swing
