See the Guardian Saturday magazine of March 2 (I told you it was 'belated'). An article on page 53 (catch it online) discusses whether song lyrics can ever be considered as literature. Ishiguro says that he wrote many bad lyrics before ever writing a novel, so the lyrics enabled him to find his voice. He became friendly with Stacey Kent after choosing one of her tracks on 'Desert Island Discs'.
There is much food for thought in the article, including the fact that Bob Dylan was uncomfortable with being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016. Dylan apparently said that he didn't think of himself as a poet, but as a 'song and dance man'. Read it all for yourself, especially if you write songs. The local jazz world has its own share of talented songwriters such as Debra Milne and also Pete Tanton, Zoë Gilby and others. Ann Alex
