Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Jazz @ The Lit and Phil: The Mark Williams Trio - March 15

(© Pam)
Mark Williams  (guitar); Paul Susans (bass guitar); Rob Walker (drums).

The Mark Williams Trio have released two albums: Balaclava Street and Last Bus to Bensham. Today was a chance for them to preview material, all written by Mark Williams, which will be on a third album to be recorded later this year. On today’s listening, what an album it is going  to be!

There was only time for five pieces in the hour allotted to them, but those five pieces showed what this trio could do. This is not a trio comprising front man and rhythm section at the back, rather three consummate musicians taking equal opportunities to shine and delight. Mark Williams led each piece of music but Paul Susans played bass as a front line instrument and Rob Walker showed his musicality on every tune.

At times almost frenetic, at times very melodic, but always inventive. Although they challenged many members of the  audience, I've got no doubt they gained many fans too. This was definitely not “easy listening jazz” but what a blast! Sylvia T
