This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Once a Fig @ the Green Note, Camden Town, London - March 12

Seeing a new band always has that sense of anticipation to it because you're never quite sure what it will be like. That's one of the reasons I go to Folkandroots shows because, in Graham Smallwood, you know you can trust the promoter's judgement. If he says they'll be good, they'll be good. Last night the cosy confines of the Green Note basement showed just why that faith is justified. 

Once a Fig are a fairly new trio of Rebecka Edlund, Phoebe Harty and Cori Smith who do something really quite magical whether that be to traditional English and Swedish folk songs or their own compositions. Musically the line up is Phoebe on cello, Cori on fiddle and Rebecka on lead vocals and 12 string acoustic guitar but that doesn't do them justice. They're good instrumentalists with wonderful harmonies but I have to say it was Rebecka's vocals that stole the show. More than just a singer she's a wordsmith and soundscape artist. With a terrific range from sweet to harsh (in a very good sense), some of her vocalisations were almost shamanic as she became a different person.

I've seen a few people recently who take "folk" as nothing more than a starting point but then create a new experience that challenges and makes something very fresh without ever losing the heart. I hope Once a Fig will be around for a long time and many more people get the chance to experience something that is both warmly familiar yet excitingly new.
