British free form drummer Tony Oxley died earlier today at the age of 85 after a long illness.
Although I can't recall hearing him live, and I'm sure I'd remember if I had, his reputation as an innovative, forward thinking drummer is enough to ensure that his name will forever be remembered within the realms of British contemporary jazz and much further afield. May he Rest In Peace. Lance

I remember hearing him play in a trio with Alan Skidmore and bassist Ali Hurand in the North Eastern Hotel in Hartlepool sometime in the early 80's. powerful doesn't cover it. Superb playing all round, driven by the wonderful drumming of Tony Oxley.

I remember Tony in the early 60s in Sheffield, with Gavin Bryars and a wonderful guitarist whose name escapes me (?…Stewart).
Great stuff, stylistically way over the head of me but it didn’t matter. Tony was a down to earth Yorkshireman who could do anything. One night I asked “What do you do for awkward time signatures like 17/8?”. “How do you want it?” said he - and proceeded to demonstrate ways of carving it up!
What a driving , and supportive, drummer.
