This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. MARIAN McPARTLAND Things Ain't What They Used To Be (June 1964)


Reading Paul de Barros' biography of Marian McPartland* (again!) prompted me to share her magic via this BBC 625 YouTube clip from 1964 which also got me to thinking that, with all due respect to George Shearing, Dill Jones, Derek Smith and Victor Feldman, Marian was probably the UK's greatest jazz piano export.  

I have such fond memories of hearing her, first on a treasured 78 where, as Marian Page, she played Bix's In a Mist on an obscure record label led by husband Jimmy. Then, many years later I was once again entranced by her playing at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland.
