The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Mike Jamieson - Last of the National Servicemen

Back in the day when we all read newspapers and telephones were in the hall as opposed to the hip pocket we got our local jazz news from the Newcastle Journal or the Evening Chronicle. The late Brian Fisher (Hartness) had a weekly column in the former and Mike Jamieson in the latter.

Mike, who despite not being as actively mobile as he once was, still turns up at the occasional gig and has recently begun a weekly memoir of his days as a national serviceman in Germany on the online newspaper (link) North East Bylines.

It's fascinating reading, not just for those such as myself who opted for the blue of the RAF as opposed to the khaki of the army, but for anyone interested in social and military history.

Unlike Mike, my 'best blue' (uniform) didn't have any stripes on the sleeve nevertheless, we both found it an experience that changed our lives.
